Do You Fancy a Round of Potholing in Michigan?

While we have yet to find a pothole deep enough to climb into, the Great Lake State seems to aspiring to new heights, or should we say depths. The Detroit Free Press tipped us off the AAA is fretting about a sharp uptick in emergency calls up there. But this has to do with potholing above ground this time, it seems.

Potholing Alarm as Roads Start Caving In

A baby pothole is born when water collects in a small hole or crack in the road surface. This moisture expands and contracts with changing ambient temperature as it freezes and thaws. Having vehicle tires compress it completes the picture.

We have heard tales from Michigan auto repair shops of drivers flocking in with cracked or bent wheel rims. And more than a few wheels gone pear shaped too. The AAA told Detroit Free News their Michigan emergency call rate jumped 36% in January and March, year on year. We have been experiencing something similar at Bonzah.

How to Avoid a Potholing Moment

If you have a potholing moment in a rental car anywhere - and you have accident damage protection with us - then we will process your claim right away. However, we can’t compensate you when your beloved one severs diplomatic relations, because you failed to show up for a date after a pothole delay. So we though a few tips about avoiding this disaster were appropriate.

# Check the tires before you begin your journey, and every time you stop. They must have the right inflation pressure, and sufficient tread to cover part of Washington’s head when you slip in a quarter with that side facing in.

# The suspension also needs to be in good condition to absorb the shock of a wheel crashing through a pothole. If your rental car starts making clunking noises before or after, consider requesting roadside assistance.

# Keep one eye on the road surface, and remain alert so you can react to potholes smartly, and at least slow down. Do not drive through puddles though, unless you want to partake in a spot of potholing yourself. Assume the water is in a hole.
